Frigiliana is a villa that fills the eastern coast of Málaga with light. Its privileged location on the edge of a Natural Park, just minutes from the Mediterranean Sea, along with the beauty of its urban layout, makes this village a must-visit destination.

On its eastern end, the Axarquía mountain range overlooks the Mediterranean Sea from the slopes of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama, providing shelter to some of the most beautiful white villages in the province of Málaga.

Frigiliana’s streets exude peace and harmony at every turn. We begin our visit at the viewpoints of the Casa del Apero, from where we can appreciate why Frigiliana is considered the most Arab-influenced village in the province.

Renaissance Palace of the Counts of Frigiliana

We head toward the old town, passing through the Plaza del Ingenio. This square is dominated by the impressive Renaissance palace of the Counts of Frigiliana, built on the remains of the Arab fortress that defended the locality.

The barribarto neighborhood and its ceramic panels

Continuing along the whitewashed streets, we reach the Barribarto, one of the best-preserved historic neighborhoods of Arabic origin in all of Spain.

It’s easy to be swept away by the Moorish ambiance that permeates these immaculate streets, allowing us to connect with the history of the villa through the twelve ceramic panels adorning the neighborhood walls.

A charming village full of curiosities

We proceed to the highest point of Frigiliana, where visitors can enjoy some of the most stunning panoramas of a village facing the Mediterranean Sea from any of its viewpoints.

The 17th-century Fuente Vieja (Old Fountain) is nearby, situated next to a very special house that is the only preserved architectural example of what Frigiliana looked like over eight centuries ago before adopting its characteristic white color.

We stroll down the Chorruelo Street to the Church of San Antonio de Padua, a model of ecclesiastical architecture found throughout the Axarquía region. Inside, there are notable pieces of interest, including a collection of Baroque masks.

Streets of Light and Peace

Frigiliana is considered one of the charming villages of the province of Málaga. Located in the Axarquía region and within the Sierras de Almijara, Tejeda, and Alhama Natural Park, it received the first award for beautification among Spain’s villages in 1982, which has made Frigiliana a highly visited place.

Its narrow, steep streets form an urban maze of small white houses stacked upon one another. Its privileged location places it just a few meters from the coast.

Gastronomy and local products

Every traveler passing through Frigiliana can taste typical local products, such as olive oil, goat cheese, raisins from Axarquía, cane honey, aloreña olives, sweet wine, white pearls of Andalucía, or chestnuts from Genal.

If you’re looking for souvenirs or gifts, consider buying a jar of cane honey, a good bottle of wine, or a wedge of local cheese. Don’t forget to visit its tourist attractions while you’re in the area.

Santa Fiora Botanical Garden

The Santa Fiora Botanical Garden features plants used by its inhabitants for food, medicinal purposes, basketry, shoe manufacturing, and silk production, among other uses.

This garden was inaugurated in 2010 and can be accessed from Avenida Carlos Cano. Inside, you can find a petanque court where you can practice sports without problems.

Archaeological Museum – Casa del Apero

In 2009, the Frigiliana Archaeological Museum was inaugurated, quickly becoming the first archaeological museum in the Axarquía. It covers an area of 400 square meters and allows visitors to explore the history of Frigiliana from the Neolithic period to the present.

Festivals of Frigiliana

Frigiliana hosts a variety of festivals and celebrations throughout the year, making it a worthwhile place to visit. Among its most notable events is the Festival of the Three Cultures and the celebration on January 20, which includes a religious function with a mass in honor of the patron saint and a procession that pays tribute to the patrons San Sebastián and San Antón, complete with fireworks along the route.

Additionally, the Frigiliana Fair, held in honor of its patron San Antonio de Padua, takes place on June 13 and lasts for five days.
